Building the Jurassic Coast!

On Wednesday, we continued learning about the history and geography of the Jurassic Coast by building our own models out of playdough! Using red dough to represent the Triassic rocks (formed in hot desert like conditions), blue dough to represent the Jurassic rocks (formed in deep ocean conditions) and green dough to represent the Cretaceous rocks (formed in swamp/lagoon like conditions), we replicated the physical processes of erosion and deposition to layer up these different rocks. We then flipped the model onto an angle to mimic the tectonic activity which created the great folds of the Jurassic coastline and sliced off the top (erosion). Finally, we layered on Upper Cretaceous rocks to replicate the ‘unconformity’ of rock layers seen at locations such as Golden Gap.
