On Tuesday, Class 5 learnt about the concept of ‘deep time’ as part of our Jurassic Coast topic. We created a timeline of major events during the 4.6 billion years since the creation of planet Earth, including when the coastline was formed during the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Using a roll of toilet paper, with each sheet representing 20 million years, we went back as far in time as we could (before we ran out of roll!) – we would actually have needed over 300 sheets to go back to the beginning of planet Earth and would have been on the other side of Wick Lane! Amazingly, we learnt that human history would be represented by just the first millimetre of the first piece of paper, highlighting how much history there has been before humans arrived.
